The Modern Face of EverestMountaineer Kenton Cool

Is Everest a morality-free zone? Join mountaineer Kenton Cool and adventure filmmaker/writer Matt Dickinson for an evening of lively discussion on the ethics of today’s Everest.

Kenton is the only European to summit Everest 5 times and Matt has successfully climbed Everest’s notorious north side, one of the more technically demanding climbs on the world's highest peak. Together the guys will take a close look at the issues surrounding the brutal fact that people have been left to die by expeditions high on Everest.

The evening also includes a rare showing of a 20-minute excerpt from the BBC film ‘Everest the Hard Way’ about Sir Chris Bonington’s legendary 1975 expedition on the SW Face of Everest.

Saturday 23 February, Nevis Centre Festival Theatre,

7-10pm, £15/£10.

Join former RAF rescue team leader Dave ‘Heavy’ Whalley and local mountain rescue team veteran and photographer Alex Gillespie for the inside story of incredible mountain

rescues and a look back at the history of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue team. This event will pay tribute to all those involved in mountain rescue, civilan teams and RAF mountain rescue teams.

The evening also includes a rare screening of the BBC’s ‘Duel with An Teallach’ film. Last seen on TV in the 1980’s, this is a jaw-dropping re-enactment of an epic technical mountain rescue.

Mountaineering Evening with Jo Gambi

Rob and Jo Gambi
Rob and Jo Gambi at the North Pole

In 2005 Rob and Jo Gambi became the first married couple to achieve the ultimate adventurer’s ambition when they climbed the ‘Seven Summits’ (the highest mountains on all seven continents) and skied to both the North and South Poles.

Rob is the first Australian and Jo the first woman to achieve this incredible feat. What’s even more remarkable is that they achieved all this while Rob was in remission from his second bout of cancer. Come along to hear an inspiring talk from Jo about perseverance, love and achieving your dreams.

Plus the evening includes a chance to see three fantastic films:

  • The 'Skye Wall' section of the award-winning 'Psyche' film by Posing Productions. Dave Birkett goes in search of his dream line in the remote setting of Skye's famous Cuillin Range. This stunning and gripping adventure results in one of the year's most significant first ascents; Skye Wall E8 6b. (20mins)
  • 'Moments of Clarity' by Andy Spink of www.hebrideanpursuits.com. A bouldering film starring Andy and Donald King shot on Mull, Tiree and Rum last summer.
  • 'Action Adept Yosemite Valley' by Tom Morrow. Great Slackline and Highline footage featuring some of the best Slackers in the world. It has climbing too!
